Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG)

Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) are key criteria which are used when measuring the sustainability and societal impact of an investment in a company or business

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) | Financial Services | EisnerAmper IrelandCompanies, investors and governments now recognise that long term sustainable performance relies on an understanding of the interdependency between traditional financial criteria and environment, social and governance criteria. While Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aims to make a business accountable, ESG aims to make these efforts measurable.

ESG Reporting

ESG Reporting helps businesses assess their ESG impact in a meaningful way through their Financial Statements and other regulatory reporting requirements. The goal of reporting is to increase company transparency and provide a method for stakeholders to easily understand how well a company is doing within different ESG categories. Additionally, investors and asset managers are increasingly looking for a single score to measure the ESG impact of investments.

Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR)

From March 2021, the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) became mandatory for asset managers and other financial market participants.

Formal disclosure obligations around how sustainability risks are integrated throughout all organisations and the services they provide are becoming mandatory, with many organisations already publishing ESG reports.  It sets out mandatory ESG disclosure obligations, aiming to ensure that sustainability risk factors are considered in investment decisions and that the principal adverse impacts of investment decisions on sustainability factors are addressed.

The EU is committed to be climate-neutral by 2050. As such, further extensive and comprehensive regulations will come into effect in the near future.

Between 2011 and 2019, the number of S&P 500 companies publishing sustainability reports went from 20% to 90%.
