New York, Week 10 – All hands on deck

IMG_20160313_190211Emer McKenna

With only 4 weeks left until the deadline now, it is all hands on deck.  I am preparing work papers for various entities to complete 1065 Partnership returns.  Among other things, we have to enter partner details and ensure the allocations provided by the client are correct.  I have also been anaylsing K1 returns in order to provide summaries within the work papers.

I’m trying to make the most of the final few weeks I have left in the USA, so I decided to take a trip to Philadelphia with a friend.  We visited many attractions including the City Hall, Liberty Bell and Reading Terminal Market.  however, a trip to Philly would not be complete without running up the iconic “Rocky” steps at the Museum of Art.  On the day the city also held their annual St Patrick’s Day Parade.  Amongst the various skills and craft on display we were pleased to see Irish dancing and music.  I even got a wave from the current Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan, as she went by on her float.

New York, Week 9 – Wrapping up

Screenshot_20160329-153546_1Sinead Cummins

For my last two weeks, I was working closely with my managers to ensure all of my jobs were wrapped up prior to my departure.  This whole experience has been great as I got to obtain a large amount of hands on funds experience.

Finishing up our secondment the day before St Patrick’s day meant we were free to explore New York on one of the biggest days of the year.  We headed out to see the parade and witness all of the Americans in their authentic Irish clothing.

New York, Week 9 – Time to go home

Blog photoHeather Foley

It’s really hard to believe our time in New York is up.  The last week was spent finishing up our jobs and completing handovers with our managers and directors.  To mark the end of our secondment, some of the New York team have brought us out for farewell lunches.

Last week we took time to see the show ‘Jersey Boys’ on Broadway.  Definitely a must see if you get to New York! We also got to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day over here – the perfect send off!

Kilian Doyle gives “Guru lecture” to students in Beaumont

Junior Achievement Ireland (“Junior Achievement”) is part of a worldwide organisation reaching out to 9.3 million young people each year.  Junior Achievement aims to inspire and motivate young people to realise their potential by valuing education and understanding how to succeed in the world of work.  This programme is operated in both primary and secondary schools and fosters a spirit of enterprise within participating schools.

As part of the Junior Achievement programme, a series of ‘Guru lectures’ are organised in participating schools across the country where students enjoy presentations from business leaders on their respective professions.  This gives the students the opportunity to meet with members of the business community and learn about different types of careers.  This year, Kilian Doyle, Director in EisnerAmper Ireland’s Financial Services Group, visited Our Lady of Mercy College, Beaumont where students enjoyed listening to Kilian discussing his career in accounting and giving career advice to the students.  As part of the lecture, Kilian completed a questions and answers session and received numerous questions from the attendees about careers in accounting.  To see a list of our current vacancies at EisnerAmper Ireland please click here.

New York, Week 9 – Non-stop in the office

AOL week 9Aoife O’Leary

Another very busy week.  From filing extensions to preparing returns for both Partnership entities and Corporations it has been non-stop in the office!

Despite the long hours though, myself and a few of the other secondees made sure to visit an Irish pub to watch the McGregor fight on Saturday night.  The atmosphere was amazing despite the final result, and it was also an advantage to not have to stay up until 5am to watch as was the case for everyone back home in Ireland!

New York, Week 8 – Working on another team

IMG_0032Emma Guilfoyle

I am working on the audit of a private equity and hedge fund.  I have been working with a different manager for the past couple of weeks and it’s great to get the opportunity to work on another team.  My two broker dealers have been finalised and thankfully the financials were filed on time.

We went to see The Harlem Gospel Choir and Jersey Boys last week which were both lots of fun.  It’s hard to believe that we are coming to the end of our secondment – I’m going to miss this view from my apartment.

New York, Week 8 – Challenging and rewarding work

The KnicksRuairi Feehan

I am working on a private equity fund that holds investments in start up companies and I am finding the work challenging and rewarding.  I am working closely with my manager to gain an understanding of how the investments are valued and their impact on the financial statements.  The private equity industry is very vibrant in America and I feel working in the sector, even for a short period of time, will benefit me in my career in the years to come.

One of the best aspects of being in America is getting the opportunity to achieve life-time ambitions such as seeing an NBA game and going to Madison Square Garden.  To get the opportunity to achieve both goals in one night was one of the highlights of my time in New York.  The Knicks are not doing so well this year and true to form they were soundly beaten on the night but the defeat did not impact my experience.  Madison Square Garden is an arena that every sports fan should experience at least once.

New York, Week 8 – First US tax return

IMG_20160302_232604Emer McKenna

The busy season has finally hit the office and this week I got involved with two new fund groups for which I had to prepare extensions.  I also completed my first US tax return (Federal and State) for review.

On Sunday, Aoife (a fellow secondee) and I booked a bridal appointment with David’s Bridal to try on some wedding dresses.  On the way there we walked through Madison Square Park soaking up some much needed sunny weather.  We had great time trying on the Vera Wang, Zac Posen and Jenny Packham dresses to find the one.  We weren’t successful this time, but we hope to have better luck next time.  To round off the day we treated ourselves to a manicure afterwards!

New York, Week 7 – Learning so much

SC Wk 7 PhotoSinead Cummins

I have now completed my two broker dealer audits, meeting the final deadline of February 29th with a week to spare.  I have been assigned a new job which I am looking forward to as this time it is the audit of a fund.  I am working directly with my manager which is great as I am learning so much.

A friend from Ireland came to visit this weekend so we all headed out with some American friends to show her around New York.  It was a very fun evening being driven around the city getting a feel for the real New York lifestyle.

New York, Week 7 – Hard work paying off

HF Blog image week 7Heather Foley

My first job is now nearly complete which meant the last week was quite busy, but it’s nice to see the hard work paying off.  I’m looking forward to being able to focus fully on my other client now.

A friend from home came to visit last week, which meant it was time to explore the city again.  Thankfully the weather was beautiful so we walked downtown and took a ferry out to Ellis Island where we saw the Statue of Liberty up close and researched our Irish ancestors at the Immigration Museum.
