New York, Week 3 – Busy busy busy
It’s hard to believe that we have been here a whole month already. Busy season is well and truly under way and I have been assigned my first two broker-dealer clients. The work is very time consuming but rewarding as I am constantly learning new things.
Last week, Charles Weinstein, the CEO of EisnerAmper LLP gave the secondees the opportunity to win tickets to a Rangers ice hockey game. I was one of the fortunate ones and was lucky enough to attend the game which was being held in Madison Square Garden along with 3 other secondees.

This week I got assigned to two broker-dealer clients. Both clients have the same deadlines, so I’m expecting some busy weeks ahead!
Last weekend the blizzard, Jonas, came to town. The whole city shut down on Saturday afternoon, so it was a perfect opportunity to go and play in the snow. The city looked beautiful covered snow, definitely an experience I will never forget.

It’s now week three and we have completed our training and are ready to get to work. Busy season hasn’t kicked off in the office just yet so myself and fellow secondee, Emer, spent our week familiarising ourselves with the EisnerAmper LLP systems. As we approached the end of the week I was allocated my first job which was to complete IT 204 LL returns.
We’re trying to make the most of our evenings in the city before busy season begins so we bought tickets to see Jess Glynn in Webster Hall. It was an amazing gig. Storm Jonas hit at the weekend resulting in the city being in lock down which was an experience to say the least! The midnight snow fight will definitely be one of my favourite moments of my secondment!

My first two weeks in New York have gone great and I am settling in well. This week I was assigned to my first job, the audit of a broker dealer – so it’s time to put my week in training to use!
New York came to a standstill at the weekend as the blizzard hit. But we didn’t let that stop the fun. Sinead Cummins, my fellow Secondee from EisnerAmper Ireland, and I braved the cold to make snow angels in Central Park.

My second and last week of training is now complete. We have been trained in individual, corporate and partnership tax returns. We will be completing Partnership Form 1065’s for the duration of our time in EisnerAmper LLP’s NYC office. I’m looking forward to getting started and working with EisnerAmper LLP’s Financial Services team.
This week the Tax Department organised a night out in Dave & Buster’s arcade to welcome the new joiners. This was a great opportunity to meet our new work colleagues and play some air hockey! On Saturday we all went to explore the city going to Ground Zero and also taking the Staten Island Ferry to catch the views of the city at sunset. Finally, to finish off the day we met up with our audit colleages along with Secondees from South Africa and Australia for a night out in the city.

Ruairi Feehan
My first week in New York involved an intensive training program called ‘Hedge Fund Boot Camp’. I found this to be both beneficial and enjoyable as I have a keen interest in the financial services industry and therefore I was in a position to learn from EisnerAmper LLP’s financial services team here in New York. I have found the US team to be accommodating, friendly, knowledgeable and above all very approachable.
I am currently reading Michael Lewis’s best seller, ‘The Big Short’. The book is about the 2007 financial crisis and how a number of Hedge Fund managers predicted the subprime crisis. One of the Partners in EisnerAmper LLP recommended watching the movie as further hedge fund training, therefore I took their advice and went to the cinema to watch the movie. Glad I did as it is an excellent film!

Week 1 in the Big Apple is now over!
We’ve been doing intensive training and are now fully up to speed with all of the systems and audit approaches they use here. We’re scheduled for our jobs to begin next week and it’s all very exciting.
During the weekend, we took full advantage of the mild weather conditions and decided to visit ground zero and catch the ferry to Staten Island to see the Statue of Liberty. The views of Manhattan were spectacular, and the sun setting over the skyline was breath taking!!

First week down and still can’t believe that I am working and living in New York! We are officially halfway through training and really starting to feel like part of the team (helped by a team night out on the Thursday!).
Our first weekend was spent doing what
New Yorkers do best – going for brunch in Freemans. We also made sure to visit Grand Central Station, walk down to Times Square and of course, go shopping!

So our first week in NYC is already complete! It was a busy week of training and great to refresh my auditing skills. Our jobs for next week have been assigned and I’m looking forward to getting started!
We’ve done a lot of exploring since we’ve arrived and have met some great new people! We went to the top of World Trade Centre One and the views were amazing. Such a great feeling to look down and think I live here.

Throughout 2015, members of EisnerAmper Ireland volunteered with the Junior Achievement Ireland (JAI) Programme. JAI is part of a worldwide organisation reaching out to 9.3 million young people each year, encouraging young people to remain in education while helping them to develop important skills needed to succeed in a changing world. The programme operates across primary and secondary school level education and fosters a spirit of enterprise within participating schools.
Three members of EisnerAmper Ireland participated in the Autumn term programme which involved six in-class lessons over three months. Niamh Hickey (pictured above) completed the programme at St. Tiernan’s Community School, Ballally. Topics covered during her lessons included success skills, building on teamwork skills and interpersonal communication through group discussions, and how these transferable skills can be applied in the working world.
