Making Europe Climate-Neutral by 2050

Making Europe Climate-Neutral by 2050 | Latest News | EisnerAmper Ireland

The European Union (E.U.) is undertaking initiatives to achieve its goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050. This article offers a brief look at three key efforts:

  1. The European Green Deal
  2. The E.U. Taxonomy
  3. The Sustainable Finance Package

The European Green Deal

In 2019, the E.U. published the European Green Deal (the “Green Deal”), with the central objective of having the E.U. become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

The Green Deal’s goals extend across various sectors and its aim is to improve the overall quality of life for E.U. citizens, both present and future. Key actions are being taken across the following areas:

  • Climate – a key milestone in meeting the objectives of the Green Deal is the European Commission’s target of a 55% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (compared to 1990 emission levels).
  • Energy – ensuring a secure, affordable and efficient energy supply to E.U. citizens, with greater reliance on renewable sources.
  • Agriculture – reducing the environmental impact of the E.U. food system and implementing a farm-to-fork strategy, which aims to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally friendly.
  • Industry – harnessing the potential in global markets for low-emission technologies as well as sustainable products and services throughout the E.U.
  • Environment & Oceans – moving toward a more circular economy, which designs the cycles of production and consumption in a way that reduces the depletion of natural resources, tackles the amount of waste and pollution, and protects biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • Transport – overhauling the current arrangements around public transport to achieve a 90% reduction in transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
  • Finance & Regional Development – ensuring a significant increase of financing to more sustainable investment and putting policies in place to encourage countries to implement greener investment strategies.
  • Research & Innovation – the launch of Horizon Europe, the E.U.’s key funding programme for initiatives which tackle global challenges.

The E.U. Taxonomy

The E.U. Taxonomy (the “Taxonomy”) will play an important role in reaching the European Commission’s 2030 target of reducing greenhouse emissions by 55%. The Taxonomy is a comprehensive, science-based classification system, establishing a list of environmentally sustainable economic activities. The aim of the Taxonomy is to help investors make more sustainable choices – ensuring investments are funnelled to where they are needed most, creating security for investors and reducing greenwashing.

The Taxonomy Regulation came into force on 12 July 2020, and establishes six environmental objectives against which investment can be measured:

  1. Climate change mitigation;
  2. Climate change adaptation;
  3. The sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources;
  4. The transition to a circular economy;
  5. Pollution prevention and control; and
  6. The protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.

Regulatory requirements on the climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation objectives above came into effect on 1 January 2022. The requirements for the remaining four objectives will come into effect on 1 January 2023.

The Sustainable Finance Package

On 21 April 2021, the European Commission published its Sustainable Finance Package containing three important sustainable finance legislative developments:

  1. The E.U. Taxonomy Climate Delegated Act (the “First Delegated Act”), formally adopted on 4 June 2021, aims to support sustainable investment by providing clarity on which economic activities most contribute to meeting the E.U.’s environmental objectives. A second Delegated Act will be published this year and will outline the European Commission’s remaining objectives.
  2. The proposal for a new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) amends the existing reporting requirements of the Non-Financial Reporting Directive, which lays down the rules on disclosure of non-financial information by certain large companies; and
  3. Six Amending Delegated Acts on fiduciary duties, investment and insurance advice will ensure that financial firms include sustainability in their procedures and their investment advice to clients.

Commentary

The European Green Deal was entered to make Europe a net-zero emitter of greenhouse gases by 2050 and hopes to demonstrate that economies can develop without increasing resource usage, even after the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The E.U. Taxonomy is ambitious and considered the most comprehensive and sophisticated initiative of its type. The U.K. is currently working on its own, separate taxonomy.

With the disclosure regime as part of the Sustainable Finance Package now in effect, there will be a significant learning curve as investors move to meet the criteria set out and transition to financing greener projects.

EisnerAmper Ireland was delighted to support, and partake in, LauraLynn’s 280,000 Steps in February challenge for a second year running.

The charity initiative ran from the 1st to the 28th of February and members of EisnerAmper’s team were set the challenge of completing 280,000 steps over the 28 days while raising funds for LauraLynn through our firm’s JustGiving page. We’re delighted that so many of our team surpassed their targets of 280,000 steps and collectively raised over €1,200.

EisnerAmper was delighted to announce that we are partnering with LauraLynn Children’s Hospice as a Corporate Partner for the third year running, helping LauraLynn to support children with life-limiting conditions and their families to live as fulfilling lives as possible.

LauraLynn Children’s Hospice mission is to provide a Community of Care that delivers evidence-based, personalised services to children with palliative care needs, complex care needs and complex disabilities, while also providing family support services and a home to their residents where quality-of-life is paramount.

Paul Cahill and David Carroll Partner Announcement | New Appointments | EisnerAmper Ireland

EisnerAmper Ireland is delighted to announce the expansion of our leadership team with the appointments of Paul Cahill as Partner in our Audit department and David Carroll as Associate Partner in our Audit and Governance, Risk & Compliance departments.

These appointments represent a further strengthening of our specialist audit, accounting, tax and risk & regulatory teams advising the Financial Services, International Business and Government sectors.

Paul Cahill, Partner – Audit

As Partner, Paul provides Audit services to a wide variety of clients from leading Irish corporates to international companies doing business in and through Ireland. Paul has extensive experience leading engagements for clients reporting under Irish GAAP and IFRS across a range of sectors including Information Technology, Energy, Aircraft Leasing, Structured Finance, Medtech and Healthcare.

As the Firm’s Head of Audit Quality, Paul is also responsible for embedding audit quality across the Firm; maintaining a centre of excellence for audit and financial reporting technical knowledge; and developing and rolling out learning and development initiatives.

Prior to joining EisnerAmper, Paul worked for 11 years with Chartered Accountants Ireland holding both regulatory and technical roles.  As an inspector with the Professional Standards Department (previously the Chartered Accountants Regulatory Board), Paul was responsible for assessing the quality of audit work of member firms, which included leading teams of inspectors on monitoring visits.  In his role as Representation & Technical Manager, Paul liaised with, and supported, technical committees across multiple disciplines, including audit, accounting, AML and GDPR, and provided technical support to members.

Prior to working with Chartered Accountants Ireland and post qualifying, Paul worked with a Big 4 firm and with a global technology business.

David Carroll, Associate Partner – Audit and Governance, Risk & Compliance

As Associate Partner, David provides Audit and Internal Audit services to the Firm’s Financial Services clients.

David has extensive experience leading engagements for a range of clients reporting under Irish GAAP, IFRS and US GAAP including aviation and aircraft leasing entities, securitisation vehicles (special purpose vehicles, Section 110 companies), listed financial services entities and funds.

David also leads Internal Audit engagements for our regulated clients including MiFID Investment Firms, Alternative Investment Fund Managers (“AIFMs”) and Management Companies.

David currently sits on the Audit Committee of the Irish Debt Securities Association (IDSA) and the Audit Practices Sub-Committee of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (ICPAI).

Prior to joining EisnerAmper, David worked with one of the world’s largest providers of fund administration services.

EisnerAmper Ireland is delighted to announce that we are partnering with LauraLynn Children’s Hospice as a Corporate Partner for the third year running, helping LauraLynn to support children with life-limiting conditions and their families to live as fulfilling lives as possible.

EisnerAmper first partnered with LauraLynn Children’s Hospice in 2020, helping them to fundraise and support children and families from all 26 counties with the aim of enhancing the quality of life for families in their care.

EisnerAmper is delighted to be participating in LauraLynn’s first fundraiser of the year – 280,000 Steps in February challenge. The charity initiative is running from the 1st to the 28th of February and our team members are being set the task of completing 280,000 steps over the 28 days and raising money for the charity through our group JustGiving page. Staff members can walk, run or jog for this challenge individually or with a team from our office.

EisnerAmper hosts Virtual Christmas Party and ‘Doing Great Work Awards’ for 2021

On Friday 17 December, EisnerAmper Ireland hosted its annual Christmas Party and fifth annual employee awards. This year was again slightly different to normal with the Christmas party being held virtually on Zoom.

All staff were invited to wear a Christmas jumper to their home office on Friday for the party and the agenda for the evening included Christmas themed Musical Bingo. The Musical Bingo was hosted by Bingo with a Pep for all staff and their family members to enjoy.

A mixture of classic Christmas songs and songs from the 80’s through to present day hits were played by our host Keith Peppard and all staff were given bingo cards filled with the names of different songs from Keith’s playlists. While everyone danced and sang along, Keith played through his playlists and songs were marked off cards. Prizes were awarded for the first 4 corners, first line and full house along with three prizes for the best Christmas outfits.

The charity initiative was held last weekend and a number of our team took on the challenge of completing either a 5k or a half marathon in the Phoenix Park. Team EisnerAmper supports Run in the Dark 2021

On 17 November 2021, EisnerAmper Ireland staff members joined thousands of runners to partake in the virtual Run in the Dark which supports ongoing research to find a cure for paralysis.

This is the fifth consecutive year ‘Team EisnerAmper’ has participated in Run in the Dark. This year’s event was held in a virtual setting similar to last year. Following the impact of Covid-19, Run in the Dark created an app to allow participants to run safely within their own area, but to still virtually join thousands of others walking or running 5k and 10k around the world.

Run in the Dark is the main fundraiser for the Mark Pollock Trust which is aiming to find a cure paralysis in our lifetime. Unbroken by blindness in 1998, adventure athlete Mark Pollock was left paralysed in 2010. Now, with the team at the Mark Pollock Trust, he is exploring the intersection where humans and technology collide, catalysing collaborations that have never been done before and in doing so unlocking $1 billion to cure paralysis in our lifetime.

The EisnerAmper Ireland Academy 2021

The EisnerAmper Ireland Academy 2021, the Firm’s annual all-staff training programme, was held today for the tenth year running. The Academy is a key part of our Firm’s all-staff training programme and is specifically designed for our professionals to accelerate their “on the job” learning and to facilitate their journey towards becoming not just great accountants but exceptional advisers and practitioners.

The theme for this year’s Academy was ‘Innovation & Transformation’ and included workshops, key-note speakers and team building exercises reaffirming our commitment to achieving and maintaining excellence in everything we do.
